On Wednesday, September 17th, the Fort Lauderdale Improv at Dania Pointe was alive with laughter, energy, and the raw spirit of comedy. The monthly Open Mic Night once again gave South Florida’s up-and-coming comics a chance to test their material, connect with the crowd, and experience the thrill (and nerves) of a live five-minute set under the spotlight.
The night was hosted by Rico Wright, who not only kept the audience engaged between acts with his quick wit but also proved why he’s one of South Florida’s freshest new comedic voices. Guiding the evening with charisma and sharp timing, Wright set the perfect tone for what was to come.
Among the performers was Ramon Garcia, a respected figure in the local scene who also teaches the Improv’s comedy class. Garcia brought his unique style, sharp cultural observations with relatable humor that resonated with both seasoned comedy fans and first-timers.
Other local comics who lit up the stage included Simone, Call Me Manny, Corey Mussler, Obnoxious, Hitman Comedy, and Carmelo “Melo” Torres. Each brought their unique style—from high-energy punchlines to quirky personal anecdotes—showcasing the diversity and growing talent of South Florida’s comedy scene.
The night also marked a special milestone for our very own Brett Diaz of My South Florida Today, who bravely stepped onto the stage for his very first stand-up performance. With the crowd cheering him on, Diaz dove into his debut set, joining the ranks of comedians who’ve taken that exhilarating leap into live comedy and learning from those locals who came before him that night.
The Fort Lauderdale Improv’s monthly open mic isn’t just about laughs—it’s about community. For many performers, it’s their testing ground, their workshop, and their playground. For the audience, it’s a chance to witness rising stars in their early days while enjoying an unpredictable night of fresh, unfiltered humor.
Whether you’re a comedy fan looking for a good laugh, or an aspiring comedian eager to step on stage yourself, the Improv’s Open Mic Night is one of South Florida’s hidden gems—proof that the next big name in comedy might just be from right here at home.
I have always admired comedians and their storytelling ability. Their superpower to think quick on their feet and control a room has intrigued me since I was a kid. I knew about the open mic nights and kept saving one day I'll try it, whats the worst thing that would happen. I jumped in on Wednesday 9/17 with both feet and it was a lot of fun. I'd recommend anyone who has a spark within them to try it out. The Improv and comedy community is very special. -BRETT DIAZ
