The I-395 Signature Bridge project in Miami is not only set to transform the skyline with its striking architecture but will also revitalize the space beneath the highway with a 33-acre public park known as “The Underdeck.” This linear park will stretch from Overtown to Biscayne Bay, creating a much-needed recreational space that reconnects neighborhoods historically divided by the construction of the original I-395 expressway.

The Underdeck is designed to serve as a vibrant green corridor, featuring walking and biking trails, public art installations, water fountains, and community spaces like plazas and play areas. A centerpiece of this space will be the “Miami Heritage Trail,” a mile-long pedestrian and cycling pathway that will link Overtown with Downtown Miami, highlighting the city’s rich cultural history through integrated public art and open spaces. The project also emphasizes sustainability and accessibility, with wide pathways, extensive landscaping, and an urban tree canopy designed to provide shade and natural beauty.

One of the most significant aspects of the Underdeck is its potential to re-stitch Miami’s urban fabric, providing a safe and inviting space for pedestrians and cyclists, promoting non-vehicular transportation, and fostering connectivity across the city. The space will also include an amphitheater, sports courts, and dedicated dog play areas, catering to the needs of residents and visitors of all ages. The elevated highway will feature fewer support columns, allowing more natural light to filter through and creating an open, airy atmosphere below.

The project, slated for completion in 2024, represents a significant investment in Miami’s infrastructure and quality of life. It is part of a broader initiative to address the city’s growing population and urban challenges by creating public spaces that encourage social interaction and physical activity, while also preserving the local environment
